2019 Summer Movie Preview

So it begins… As we come out of the desolate wasteland that typically is the spring movie season, with the few masterful exceptions to the rule of mediocrity (looking at you, Us), we start to gear up for the summer blockbuster season. This year has me particularly giddy over the bright colors, big stars, large scale, and potentially massive destruction that the following films have to offer.

Godzilla: King of The Monsters (May 31st)

I was already excited for this upon learning that Mothra was the big bad for the next American Godzilla entry, but throwing in Ghiddora AND Rhodan was icing on the cake. Now, I am taking this with a grain of salt, since 2014’s Godzilla and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island both left a lot to be desired, but a strong cast, intriguing trailers, and an open promise for the destruction that is typically associated with the giant monster genre has me counting the days until this release.

Side note: I was lucky enough to see some extended scenes in IMAX prior to Avengers: Endgame, and MY GOD. This may be a must see in large format. The level of chaos and destruction shown is MIND BLOWING and GORGEOUS.

Toy Story 4 (June 21st)

Damn you, Disney. After the emotional torment you put us through with TS3, you really expect us to show up for this?!? Well you’re damn right we’re going to, and if the trajectory of this series is any indication of what to expect, we will all be left in tears and traumatized, but oh so satisfied. My only concern is the story looks a little too similar to the first, with an added Carnival, but it’s probably still going to be a great time, especially with this now being the type of movie that parents who were younger when the first was released will bring their kids to.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

DISCLAIMER: I am a Spider-Man fanboy, but this legitimately looks to be another hit for Marvel/Disney. Tom Holland is possibly the best to wield the Web Shooters, and adding an A (Okay, probably B) list star like Jake Gyllenhaal into the mix opposite Holland (You aren’t fooling anyone Disney, he’s the bad guy) looks to create some great action and tension that Marvel seems to be so keen at creating. I’m also really hoping this answers some of the questions raised by Endgame.

Midsommar (July 3rd)

Ari Aster (Director) knocked it out of the park in his debut Hereditary last year, and Midsommar looks to pick up where he left off! Initially, I wasn’t sold, but the most recent trailer that dropped got me hook, line, and sinker. Although the whole “Cultish summer festival” premise has been done before, if this can capture the same tone and tension as Hereditary, Aster May have another modern classic on his hands.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (July 26th)

Honestly, I don’t have much to say about this one. Leo, Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Tim Roth, all directed by Tarantino? SIGN ME UP.
