So you think Rotten Tomatoes sucks?

A thing floating around the inter webs lately, most notably around the releases of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Captain Marvel, is how much Rotten Tomatoes sucks. Well here’s the sad truth, it’s actually awesome, and you probably don’t know how to use it.

Firstly, what rotten tomatoes is is an aggregator for all reviews posted. It takes the positive reviews and the negative reviews, and shows what percentage of critics thought a movie was generally good. The score a movie has is the final percentage.

Here’s the problem:

The tomato meter is not an end all, be all judgement of if a movie is good or not, it’s a generalization. So, yeah, some people will disagree. If you’re one of these people who constantly thinks “that’s wrong, this movie was awesome” while you’re looking at a sub 50% score…

Here’s what you do:

LOOK AT THE ACTUAL REVIEWS. I know, more work, right? Well that’s how you best utilize RT. Look through reviews of some movies that you’re in the minority of, and find a critic or two who’s views align with yours. Then, next time a movie gets released, find those critics that you agreed with, and that are like minded to you, to get a better understanding if you’ll enjoy it or not.
