When I was writing my 2019 movie preview I purposely left out Dark Phoenix for this very rant.
Despite the fact that the quality of the X-Men films has been steadily declining (Main storyline, not Deadpool or Logan), and that it seems the actors involved with them don’t even seem interested anymore *Cough* Jennifer Lawrence *Cough*, I still find myself smiling from ear to ear and anxiously anticipating the release while I watch Jean Grey flip cop cars like solo cups at a frat house in the trailers. BUT WHY?!? Apocalypse was pretty dull at best (although I didn’t hate it as a whole), the new actors they’ve brought in don’t quite live up to their comic counterparts, they’ve failed to tap into the VAST sea of X-Men yet to be seen on screen, and the impending doom for the franchise a la Disney gives me every reason to logically look at this film and say “pass”.
I guess flashbacks to the X-Men cartoons on Saturday mornings and flipping through pages as a kid have kept me holding on to hope. Hope that I fully expect to be absolutely shattered, much like the studio will be when Dark Phoenix brings in record low numbers upon release.
I expect it to be bad, like LAST STAND BAD. Not because it’s PRETTY MUCH THE SAME MOVIE, but because of all the things it doesn’t have going for it. But my dumb ass will still be sitting here giddy like a school girl until inevitability humbles my inner child on June 7th
