Aladdin (2019)

“Oh no, Disney. What is you doin?” Was my own reaction (and undoubtedly the reaction of most) when Disney announced yet another live action remake. In general, I’m very against the wave of live action remakes that are being produced by Disney, but I can now say Aladdin was probably my favorite of them!

The Upside:

All of the leads have a good presence and decent chemistry, the songs are still as catchy (albeit a couple of them not as much as the others) and Will Smith’s spin on the Genie was actually entertaining and had his own personality in contrast with Robin Williams’ classic portrayal. It has enough of its own flare to feel like a true Disney installment and not a shot for shot, cash grab, remake.

The Downside:

Although the characters have great presence, there are many times dialogue and acting comes off as stale, and other times over the top. Especially when actors share the screen with Will Smith. There aren’t many times they hit the acting sweet spot. Also, the one scene many remember and are looking forward to, A whole new world, is one of the movie’s weakest spots. Whereas most of the film is colorful and fun, that scene is dull and seems that the director took a safe route of “let’s not screw this up” rather than “let’s make this fun and give it our own spin.” The CG also leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to Genie’s blue appearance. It’s about as bad as people expected, but Disney and Guy Ritchie made the right move in making Genie blend in as Will Smith himself for the majority of the runtime.

The Verdict:

Although Aladdin is fun and colorful, and Disney die hards and kids will love it, it is still a remake. It does have a lot of its own personality, but in the end, it really isn’t anything new or spectacular.
