Godzilla: KotM was the first movie of the summer I was genuinely excited for (I don’t consider Endgame a summer release, fight me), but what I thought would kick off the summer with a bang, has landed with a thud.
The Upside:
The Monsters. All of the monsters who appear on screen look GORGEOUS. It’s the type of character design you would expect from a large budget in the hands of Michael Dougherty (Trick R Treat / Krampus). The scale of the film is also quite impressive. The level of destruction and chaos captured is worthy of the Godzilla title, and a few action sequences are just plain awesome. Side Note: Ken Watanabe needed more screen time. He is amazing and I could literally listen to him spout nonsense for hours.
The Downside:
The story in the forefront is headscratchingly moronic, and is focused on for WAY too much of the runtime. It seems that every character is actively working against themselves and do nothing to add to the flimsy plot holding the film together. The strong points of the film are definitely when things are shown, not spoken. That being said, many of the action sequences are shot poorly, leaving the audience looking at a murky, obstructed mess. Several scenes which COULD have been awesome are shown in poor perspective, which at times makes it hard to really follow the action at hand.
The Verdict:
In the end, not even the few spectacular action sequences and great monster design can salvage the messy and nonsensical majority of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. A film which could’ve made up for its story with mind blowing visuals, falls short in almost every way.
4/10
High Point: literally anything Ken Watanabe says or does.
Low Point: Plan to save the world by literally killing everyone.
