Ma had the potential to become an interesting psychological thriller/horror, and relevant cautionary tale against bullying and overuse of social media, but alas, it is not. Ma ends ups being formulaic and lacks any sort of tension or shock value to make it stand out in the genre.
The Upside:
Ma’s cast below Octavia Spencer is surprisingly competent. It’s definitely the group of young actors any director of a lower budget horror flick would dream for. All leads have chemistry and great presence on screen, especially Octavia Spencer.
The Downside:
The story is BLAND. What was marketed as a winding path ends up being a Point A-Point B revenge flick, with no real interesting content, or moments to make it stand out. It’s very mild horror and lack of substance keep it from fully utilizing it’s cast.
The Verdict:
In the end Ma is an everyday, run of the mill thriller that doesn’t pack a punch and underuses a cast that would easily carry any other horror script.
