Dark Phoenix Review

๐Ÿฟ

Despite what most critics are saying, Dark Phoenix is not a “bad” movie. That being said, it isn’t particularly good.

The Upside:

Almost all of the lead actors give great performances, which is essential in this installment of the X-Men franchise, as it is HEAVILY character driven. The visuals are also stunning. The attention to detail and intricacy of the special effects make it a very visually pleasing film.

The Downside:

The story moves at a snails pace, and frankly, I was pretty bored with it. None of the characters are particularly interesting, the antagonists are never given much of a purpose, and the stakes of the film, which are implied to be very high, never feel that way. J-Law seems to mail this one in, giving possibly the worst performance of her career, and the action scenes leave a lot to be desired. Even the high points in the action in Dark Phoenix are quite unimpressive in comparison to other installments of the franchise.

The Verdict:

Dark Phoenix isn’t anything that will be celebrated, but it is a competently made film throughout. The great performances from Sophie Turner and the rest of the main cast (minus J-Law) offset the lackluster action sequences and shallow antagonists.

5/10

High Point: Sophie Turner looking all badass / Train sequence

Low Point: Jennifer Lawrence
