💀💀💀
“Are we having fun?” YES WE ARE.
The Upside:
Child’s Play, although technically a reboot, takes the premise of the 80’s original and turns it on its head. By replacing the supernatural aspects of the original with technology going haywire, it puts a fun and relevant twist on what people think is a familiar story. The kills are gory and creative while fully utilizing smart technology, There is genuine suspense and atmosphere, and Mark Hamill gives Chucky real character and personality, which works extremely well with the creepy character design.
The Downside:
By replacing the entire background of Chucky and relying more on the technological aspects of the story, there is little that actually makes it reminiscent of the original. This may have been a film that would’ve worked better as a completely original film, as opposed to tying it to familiarity for blatant marketing purposes.
The Verdict:
Child’s Play will give audiences exactly what they want and then some. It is a great blend of comedy and horror, as well as a relevant commentary on over-use of technology. It also has a truly creepy atmosphere, creative kills, and ends up being one of the better reboots in recent years.
7/10
High Point: Mark Hammill’s voice acting
Low Point: Existing as a reboot
