Can we please take a moment to appreciate the fact that Disney/Pixar has created 4 nearly flawless films in the same franchise?
The Upside:
Toy Story 4 comes back with another heartfelt, humorous and emotionally deep addition to its impressive predecessors. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and the rest of the original group all come back with their A-game and the new additions of Forky, Duke Kaboom, and various others are all phenomenal. Toy Story 4 also boasts an antagonist that (although really creepy) you can’t help but feel empathetic towards. Pixar is also flexing its muscles with visuals and animation that is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Everything that Toy Story 4 does, it does extremely well.
The Downside:
Although it is different, Toy Story 4 does take pieces from the previous entries to form its plot, making the lost toy premise feel somewhat unoriginal (emphasis on somewhat). Also, screen time for many of the original toys is limited, as the story centers mainly around Woody, Buzz, Forky, a handful of new characters, and Bo Peep, so fans of smaller original characters may be a bit disappointed.
The Verdict:
Toy Story 4 is very emotional, and very visually pleasing. It comes through with everything fans of the franchise love, as well as many new additions that all work very well. Toy Story 4 is not just one of (if not the) best animated films of the year, but one of the best movies this year period.
9/10
High Point: The fun new characters. “Yes we Can-ada!”
