47 Meters Down: Uncaged Review

A clumsy, yet entertaining step up from the original.

Synopsis:

When an impromptu cave dive goes wrong, a group of teenage friends desperately try to find a way out, while avoiding the bloodthirsty sharks that lurk in the underwater maze.

The Upside:

As much as I hate jump scares (not physically, just prefer genuine horror), 47MD:U has quite a few good ones. On top of that, it does make use of the environment it presents and does a lot better job than the original in portraying the actual peril its characters face. The dialogue and acting is also MILES ahead of the first, and the main character is someone you can root for. Where this movie truly stands out, is its climax, although the ending is B-Movie ridiculous, it is pure fun and inventive.

The Downside:

The kills are fairly uninventive and unoriginal, which take a huge “bite” out of the enjoyment of the film. The CG leaves a lot to be desired, and it is littered with typical horror tropes. It also gets a bit repetitive, and the change up toward the end to fighting the elements instead of sharks doesn’t really work all that well.

The Verdict: C+

The film is repetitive and doesn’t do much other than jump scares, but its competence in its scares and filmmaking, and really fun ending make it a fine b-movie romp.

The Upside: Glass Bottom Boat

The Downside: Deep Blue Sea rip-off
