An unoriginal premise and lack of any defining qualities keep Don’t Let Go from taking off.
Synopsis:
After the tragic death of his Niece and Brother, a detective utilizes phone calls from his niece, seemingly from beyond the grave, to solve his family’s murder.
The Upside:
While Don’t Let Go doesn’t necessarily do anything that stands out or is new from past films, everything it does, it does competently. The acting, dialogue, and cinematography is all done with relative skill, and the final product is fine.
The Downside:
Although the movie is very competently made, that’s about where it ends. The premise of getting help “beyond the grave” has come and gone countless times and just doesn’t feel best utilized throughout the film. The twist ending is also telegraphed from the start.
The Verdict: C
Don’t Let Go is a competent film. It does enough to keep itself from falling into “bad” movie territory, but fails to utilize its premise in original ways, or do anything to stand out. All this being said, most audiences will be satisfied with the final product.
The High Point: Timelines connect
The Low Point: Transitions
