For those of you who haven’t seen, a promo image for Rise of Skywalker leaked recently and one noticeable thing about said picture is Kylo Ren has his helmet back with repairs. (See below).

To this, my response is: WHAT THE ACTUAL F?
I get a lot of people didn’t like the Last Jedi. Personally I did (A lot), and for those of you thinking it’s the atrocity and low point of the series you say it is, meesa thinkin yousa bein too hard on it, but one moment in TLJ carries more weight and significance than almost any other moment in terms of building up Kylo Ren as a characters, which was Kylo smashing his helmet.

This signifies a transformation. It marks the point where he is no longer the puppet for Snoke and finally takes the turn into being the full fledged villain of the trilogy (to a point he won’t be redeemed from I HOPE). He isn’t wearing the mask as an homage to Vader any more, and has his own motivations, own agenda, and own plan for total power. He’s matured into an actual force to be reckoned with. SO WHY RETCON IT?
One thing I truly appreciated about The Last Jedi is how it trimmed off the excess weight of The Force Awakens. The original characters were never all that relevant to the new ones, and TLJ paves the way for a straight up face-off between Rey and Kylo, who would now be a true villain.
This helmet change may be minor, but to reverse something as momentous gives me a ton of red flags for The Rise of Skywalker. What else are they going to retcon for the sake of fan service? Are they actually going to try and redeem Kylo, who previously murdered one of the most beloved characters of the franchise? It raises a lot of questions, and makes me concerned that they’ll fall back instead of moving forward with the franchise. Hopefully I’m over-reacting and Disney is just trying to sell toys, and there aren’t truly any alternative motives. Only time will tell I suppose.
