Review: Godzilla vs. Kong

Let. Them. Fight.

The Upside:

Godzilla vs Kong takes all of the plot weight, over the top drama, complicated characters, and slowed pacing from the previous entries in each of Kong and Godzilla’s franchises and throws them right out the window. The streamlined and simplified plot and characters make it what it truly should be: TWO GIANT KAIJU ICONS BEATING EACH OTHER FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT. It’s big, it’s colorful, it’s action packed, and it’s exactly what a blockbuster move should be. But above all, it’s really damn entertaining.

The Downside:

As previously mentioned, the plot is incredibly simple (ok, It’s honestly pretty dumb) and character development is kept to a minimum. Luckily, this works to the advantage of the premise, and why people go see movies like this in the first place.

The Verdict: B+

It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, or bring anything especially new to the Giant-Kaiju Movie Genre, but it’s held together well enough by it’s plot, and has more than enough spectacle with this iconic showdown to be a great popcorn movie, and the perfect way to bring the masses back to the big screen (or to HBO Max).

High Point: Hong Kong Climax

Low point: anti-energy drink?
